Couples who are in trouble in their marriage often decide to divorce too soon. Research shows that couples who stay together and work on the marriage often stay married and are happier when interviewed five years later.
The Family Ministries Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago has developed Controlled Separation as a TOOB (teach out of the box) downloadable resource. Controlled Separation (CS) is for use by couples, clergy, therapists, mediators, and others interested in helping couples who want to separate or do not know what to do other than divorce. Selecting a time of separation in their marriage can be helpful for many couples. CS guides a couple to create a plan for time apart that considers property, respects the couple and provides for the care and well being of the children. There is an additional CS TOOB specifically for Catholic couples.

Not at all. Most couples who believe in marriage, and want to stay in the marriage learn how to work out their differences. If there are problems with addictions or abuse it is best to seek professional help or attend an Alanon group in your area. It helps couples in trouble to talk to a knowledgeable pastor or a couple you respect who can help you sort things out. Perhaps attending a marriage education class would be another idea. Would you like to set up a time to talk a bit?
